How should chilled and frozen cases be labelled?

A label that survives cold storage may not bond when applied to an already cold or wet case. Test the application stage and the subsequent storage cycle separately.

Specify two temperatures, not one freezer rating

Chilled and frozen case labelling needs a compatible label construction, a suitable pack surface and a printer-applicator rated for the installation. Record the case-surface condition when the label is applied, then the conditions the finished label must survive. Applying to a dry case before chilling is not the same task as applying to a frozen case leaving a store.

Media selection distinguishes minimum application temperature from service temperature after application. Avery Dennison’s selection process asks for both; Zebra also publishes application and service ranges for particular label products. Those ranges belong to the chosen material, not to every label or Lancing machine. Media selection conditions.

What to establish for each labelling position
Before chilling or freezingRecord the time available for the bond to develop before temperature falls, along with packing-surface cleanliness. Test adhesion again after storage and handling, not just immediately after application.
Inside a chilled roomMeasure the actual case surface and ambient conditions. Confirm that the label, ribbon, printer, sensors, applicator and any enclosure are suitable for that location.
On an already frozen caseCheck the selected media’s application limit and whether frost or ice is present. A low service-temperature rating alone is insufficient evidence of initial bonding.
At the exit from cold storageInclude condensation and changing surface temperature in the trial. A dry demonstration pack may not reproduce the case presented during real dispatch.
On stretch wrap rather than boardTreat film movement, seams, tension, moisture and scanning background as a different application. Agree the label position relative to the wrap and pallet geometry.

A qualification sequence for cold-store labels

  • Use production board, wrap and coating from the actual packing operation. Include visibly different surface finishes and the normal range of filled-case shapes.
  • Record surface temperature, visible moisture, time out of storage and handling history at application. Do not substitute room temperature for measured pack conditions.
  • Apply the proposed production labels using the intended method. Check release from the liner and pad as well as initial attachment.
  • Follow the relevant storage, transport and temperature-change sequence. Agree the test duration and handling with the customer instead of selecting an arbitrary short demonstration.
  • Inspect lifting, wrinkling, adhesive transfer and printed-code readability after the cycle. Use the real scanner where practical, including the final wrapped or stacked state.
  • Change one variable at a time if a failure occurs: label construction, surface preparation, application position or machine settings.

Do not scrape ice, reach into moving equipment or introduce unapproved heaters to make a trial pass. Any alteration to guarding, heating or cleaning arrangements needs the responsible site team’s assessment and the equipment supplier’s instructions.

Questions about cold-chain print and apply

Is it better to apply a label before or after freezing?

Neither location is universally correct. Before-freeze application can offer a more controlled bonding surface, but the finished label must survive the later cycle. After-freeze application needs material and equipment suitable for the surface presented at that point. Choose the position by trial results, traceability timing and line layout.

Does “freezer adhesive” prove that a wet carton can be labelled?

No. A product description does not establish performance on every wet, frosted or coated surface. Check the exact material specification and trial the normal moisture conditions. The same adhesive may behave differently on dry board, a surface coating and stretched film.

Why can a barcode pass at the labeller but fail after storage?

Storage and handling can change both the printed image and the label position. Condensation, rubbing, edge lift or a wrinkle across the code may affect the later scan. Agree acceptance checks after the cold-chain cycle as well as at the point of application.

Does a cold-rated label make the whole labeller suitable for a cold room?

No. The label rating does not cover the printer, electronics, sensors, actuators, compressed-air system or protective enclosure. Confirm the environmental specification of the complete selected assembly and its maintenance access before installation.
